The Prize was established in 2007. The main purpose of the Prize is to reward excellence in the Master of Urban Design degree program.

The eligibility criteria for the Urbanism and Award for Excellence in Urban Design in New Zealand are stated below:

1. Students must deliver outstanding work in the Master of Urban Design Programme. The winning project will be selected by a panel comprising at least one representative from the School of Architecture and Planning and one from Urbanism+.

2. The University of Auckland Council will award the Prize upon the recommendation of the Head of the School of Architecture and Planning.
