Eligibility

  • All those applying for the United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship must be between 25 and 40 years old and be from a developing country.
  • Similarly, applicants must have completed a first university degree and be able to conduct independent advanced academic research and study.
  • Mid-level professionals and government officials are eligible to apply. They should be engaged in ocean affairs and the law of the sea, particularly in implementing UNCLOS and SDG-14.
  • The proposed research and study plan of every applicant must clearly contribute and add to their nation’s implementation of ocean affairs and the law of the sea.
  • Applicants must be free of all other responsibilities during the entire course of the Fellowship unless otherwise authorized.
  • In addition, UN fellows will have to work on key deliverables. This includes a written 100-page thesis, a well-designed research presentation, and an ocean governance matrix. Several other assignments will be completed by all fellows during the entire duration of the Fellowship.
