The Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarships in New Zealand is open to all nationals. These scholarships are available for undergraduates.

Eamon Molloy, born in Reefton in 1928, was a man whose life resonated with unwavering commitment and profound kindness. Born to an Irish mother, Margaret Mary, and a New Zealand-born father of Irish descent, Patrick Joseph Molloy, Eamon’s upbringing instilled in him a deep-rooted faith and an abiding belief in the teachings of Christ. It was this foundation that propelled Eamon towards a lifelong dedication to aiding others.

Immersed in the St Vincent de Paul Society across various capacities, Eamon exemplified his commitment by reaching out to support the underprivileged. His altruistic spirit shone brightly in the 1960s when he began extending his assistance to numerous foreign students and migrants. Eamon became a guiding force for these individuals, facilitating their integration into New Zealand society by securing permanent accommodations and introducing them to the local way of life. As a guardian figure, he oversaw the overall welfare of many overseas students in Christchurch, going above and beyond to ensure their well-being.

His advocacy didn’t stop there. During the late 1960s and 1970s, Eamon assumed an advisory role in the Canterbury Malaysian & Singaporean Student Association. He played a pivotal role in aiding Indo-Chinese refugees arriving in New Zealand, working tirelessly to reunite families separated in refugee camps. Often battling bureaucratic hurdles and administrative obstacles, Eamon devoted days to extensive research and correspondence, ensuring families were reunited. Even in his eighties, he remained actively involved in extending a warm welcome to ethnic minorities, continuing his legacy of compassion.

Eamon Molloy’s life of service spanned over 50 years, leaving an indelible mark on the community, particularly ethnic communities. His dedication was acknowledged just before his passing in November 2009 when he received the Queen’s Service Medal.

The inception of this scholarship was made possible by the heartfelt contributions of those whose lives were touched by Eamon. Their desire to preserve his memory in a significant manner led to the creation of this scholarship, a testament to his enduring impact on numerous lives.

The benefits of the Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarships in New Zealand are:

1. The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value of $10,000.

2. The scholarship is paid to the recipient’s University fees account.

The eligibility criteria for the Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarships in New Zealand are stated below:

1. Required Language: English.

2. Eligible Countries: Undergraduate Asian students at the University of Canterbury

3.  Applicants must be either (1) citizens of Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam, or (2) holders of Hong Kong permanent identity cards. Applicants must not also be citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand or holders of Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visas.

4. Selection will be based on:

i) Academic achievement;

ii) Financial need; and

iii) Leadership and personal qualities indicating the applicant’s potential to be a success in life, as demonstrated in a personal statement describing his or her attributes, achievements, and ambitions.

iv) Recipients must be full-fee-paying international students enrolled full-time at the University in their second, third, or fourth year of a programme for an undergraduate degree.

5. The scholarship is tenable for one year.

6. The scholarship is co-tenable with any other award unless the conditions of the other award preclude this.

7. In the event where a recipient’s enrolment in the year of tenure no longer meets the conditions

8. specified above, the scholarship is withdrawn and any paid funds may be recovered.

9. Continuation of a scholarship is conditional on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the University’s statutes and regulations.

1. Applications must be made online at the Scholarships website by 31 March.

2. Applications are accepted from previous recipients of the scholarship and are given equal consideration with applications from those who have not held the scholarship before.
