Introduction

The Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Philosophy are accepting applications for the Interdisciplinary PhD Studentships in Multimodal Argumentation at the University of Groningen for the academic year 2022/2023.

The University of Groningen International scholarship assists talented and deserving international students who want to apply for the PhD programme at the University of Groningen. The scholarship winner will get an award amount of € 2,249 during their study.

The successful candidate will receive a scholarship of € 2,249 gross per month at the University of Groningen.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities  are eligible for this University of Groningen International scholarship.
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: PhD degree in Multimodal Argumentation.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • To have thorough training in research skills in multimodal analysis.
  • To have a background in linguistics with a clear interest in philosophical issues or a background in philosophy with a clear interest in linguistic issues.
  • To have a special interest in interdisciplinary and willingness to bridge between multimodality, linguistics, discourse analysis, and philosophy, particularly argumentation theory.
  • To be fluent in English (both oral and written)
  • To be able and willing to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • To be able to finish the PhD thesis in four years.
  • To enjoy planning, taking the initiative, and academic writing; and
  • To have a desire to publish.

Others

  • How to Apply: The applicants must submit admission applications online via the application portal. A scholarship application can be made online.
  • Supporting Documents: The students are required to present the following documents to the university:
  • A brief letter of motivation
  • A CV, including contact details of two academic referees
  • A research proposal of up to 2,000 words, covering (a) state of the art, (b) main research question, key objectives, and relevance, (c) the proposed corpus and (methodological) approach, and (d) the proposed timetable for the writing of your thesis. This proposal should correspond to the project description above.
  • A writing sample of no more than 5,000 words, such as an essay or part of a Master’s thesis
  • Certified official transcripts of your academic degrees.
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants must have completed an MA degree related to one of the areas mentioned above with an excellent academic record (MA thesis grade: min. 8/10)
  • Language Requirement: If English is not your first language, you should provide evidence of English language ability: IELTS, TOEFL, or other acceptable proof. Please see the English Language requirements section for more details.
