To support students to complete their education in the UK, the University of Leicester has decided to award ERC-Funded PhD Studentships in Childhood in Iron and Viking Age Scandinavia. University of Leicester International Scholarship is open for the academic year 2022/2023.

The PhD researcher will develop and conduct a programme of research on the diversity of childhood experiences and roles in Iron and Viking Age Scandinavia. This will include the generation of primary data, analysis of that data, and the writing of a PhD dissertation.

Established in 1957, the University of Leicester is a public research university based in Leicester, England. The main campus is south of the city center, adjacent to Victoria Park. The university has research groups in astrophysics, biochemistry and genetics. It also has a lively and worthwhile environment for studying that prepares students for their future.

This 3-year ERC Studentship provides:

• UK/International tuition fee waiver
• Annual stipend of £16,500
• Research allowance (for books, conferences, etc.) to be used in discussion with PI

• Eligible Countries: All nationalities are eligible for this University of Leicester International Scholarship.
• Eligible Course or Subjects: PhD degree in Childhood in Iron and Viking Age Scandinavia offered by the university
• Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
• Previous research experience with the periods, regions, and/or themes of the Body-Politics project.
• Experience working with primary archaeological sources of evidence, e.g. skeletal remains, objects and/or excavation data.
• Ability to read a Scandinavian language, or aptitude to learn.
• A previous study of either late prehistoric/early medieval northern Europe OR archaeological approaches to childhood.
