Introduction

The Fully Funded Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship is open to all nationals. It is a nine-month fellowship program with Durham University. The fellowship includes undertaking an investigative project inside a newsroom in Toronto, London, or New York. The fellow will be mentored and trained by editors at Reuters or other media partners while supervised by Durham University. The Sir Harry Evans Global fellows will have access to university academics and research resources. This international fellowship is designed to allow fellows to develop rigorous, fact-based research and reporting skills.

The global fellowship provides the opportunity to collaborate and develop ideas in a thriving community of journalists with the support of world-leading and best researchers. This 2025 Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship aims to start as soon as possible, subject to the immigration requirements being met. Durham University will employ the selected applicants as fellows at the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS). With the support of IAS colleagues, the fellows will identify and build a network of international researchers at the university to get help and support in their investigative journalism practice.

Benefits

The benefits of the Fully Funded Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship are:

  • The fellows will receive a monthly salary of c.£4,444 (equivalent to a pro-rata salary of c.£53,333 per year).
  • The fellowship will also provide a living stipend of £1,250 per month.
  • Fellows will also get a one-time payment of £1,800 for travel and related expenses.
  • If the selected fellow is a current news or media organization employee and he/she takes leave to pursue the fellowship, then Durham University will also pay up to a maximum of £12,000 to their current employer to cover their temporary staff costs, it is subjected to specific terms and conditions.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for the Fully Funded Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship are stated below:

  • The global fellowship is open to applicants from all over the world.
  • Applicants must be early-career journalists with two to five years of professional experience in journalism.
  • Applicants with experience in investigative reporting capacities in related professional fields may be considered, but it depends on a case-by-case basis.
  • The related professional fields may include socio-political publications and campaigns leading human rights, working as a researcher or author on authoritative investigative work, or developing in-field photo or video research projects, exhibitions, or documentaries.
  • The international fellowship encourages applicants from under-represented groups in journalism.
