Scholarship Description

The Fully Funded James Buchanan Fellowship in USA is open to all internationals. The duration of the postdoctoral fellowship program is one year. International students who have recently graduated with doctoral degrees are eligible to apply for this fully funded fellowship in the United States. This fellowship is highly competitive and open to students from around the world. 

It encourages early-career scholars to engage ideas seriously in the political economy of Virginia, Adam Smith, and the Austrian and Bloomington schools of political economy. The James Buchanan Fellows will be introduced to the modern applications of these innovative ideas to questions in social sciences dealing and relating to the dynamics and institutional underpinnings of political, economic, and social coordination.

James Buchanan Fellows will get an opportunity to spend two weekends and one week of residence at George Mason University (Fairfax, VA) during their academic year, participating in discussions on political economy. Each colloquium is defined and structured in a set of some readings and also includes discussion sessions, formal meals, lectures, and hospitality. Furthermore, Hayek Program scholars, different affiliated scholars, and Buchanan Fellowship alumni serve as discussion leaders and participants during these activities. Fellows will join an international network of Mercatus students, scholars, and alumni who are conducting, participating, and engaging with cutting-edge research in the modern political economy and are eligible to apply for international conferences and research funding.

It is a fantastic opportunity for them to learn from the top researchers and mentors. They will also become part of an extensive international network and make lifetime connections with other fellows. Scholarship Benefits

The benefits of the Fully Funded James Buchanan Fellowship in USA are:

1. The total award of the James Buchanan Fellowship program is up to $10,000.

2. The total award will cover the stipend amount.

3. It will also cover all the reading materials.

4. The award amount will also cover the travel and lodging required to attend colloquia hosted by the Mercatus Center.

5. Fellows will also be able to reimburse any expenses related to the academic travel for the colloquia.

6. Fellows will be a part of an international networking environment.

Scholarship Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for the Fully Funded James Buchanan Fellowship in USA are stated below:

1. Students applying for the Fellowship program must have completed their doctoral degree within the last five years.

2. Applicants must have an excellent academic position at an accredited university or a good research position with an organization dedicated to in-depth research in social sciences and other sciences.

3. Applicants must be able to commit to travel for two weekends and one week for the colloquia part of the fellowship during the upcoming academic year.

4. Applicants with research or teaching interests that can benefit from a greater understanding of critical writings in political economy are encouraged to apply.

5. Applicants must adhere to policies, program procedures, and deadlines provided by Mercatus Center staff related to the activities of the Fellowship program.

6. Applicants must attend and actively participate in all the scheduled programs of the events, including meals and other social activities.

1. Cover Letter of 1-2 pages explaining your graduate school career to date, research interests and current projects, academic career goals, familiarity with the thinkers related to the Virginia, Austrian, and Bloomington schools of political economy, and what you hope to get out of the program.
