Introduction

The surface dynamics group in  PhD Scholarship at Swansea University is home to a unique molecular beam apparatus which uses magnetic field manipulations to control and measure the rotational quantum state of a molecule as it collides with a surface, experiments which are impossible to perform using any other existing technique. Following our proof of principle demonstrations, we are now applying this new technique to study the interaction of various small molecules with metallic and insulating surfaces. The PhD project, which is part of our 5-year ERC consolidator research project “rotational waves”, will include aspects of designing parts of an experimental instrument, performing ultra-sensitive surface science measurements and designing and implementing data analysis techniques.
