University of Tokyo MEXT Scholarship 2027 in Japan | Fully Funded

University of Tokyo MEXT Scholarship 2027 supports international students entering the Graduate School of Science for Master’s or Doctoral programs, providing monthly allowance, travel costs, and tuition exemption while fostering international exchange. The University conducts preliminary selection and recommends candidates to MEXT; prospective applicants must contact the university/graduate school where they wish to study as their first step.

The scholarship is administered by the Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo, which accepts applications from outstanding international students aiming to enter Japan in October 2027. The Graduate School performs internal nomination before the University of Tokyo forwards candidates to MEXT for final selection.

University of Tokyo MEXT Benefits

  • 144,000 yen/month (for a student’s Master’s Program), or 145,000 yen/month (for a student of a Doctoral Program).
  • an additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be added to those students undertaking study or research in some designated regions of the country.
  • MEXT will provide an economy-class airline ticket for recipients arriving in Japan during the designated period.
  • MEXT will issue economy class air tickets to recipients who return to their home country within the final month of the scholarship period upon application.
  • Enrollment and Tuition fees will be exempted.
  • The recipient is guaranteed a room in the University of Tokyo International Lodge for the first one year (furnished room with rent approx. 50,000–70,000 yen/month depending on lodge).

University of Tokyo MEXT Eligibility Criteria

  • International students with outstanding academic records who wish to enter Japan in October, 2027 as a new student to study in the Master’s or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science.
  • Applicants must have the nationality of a country with diplomatic relations with the Japanese government; applicants who have Japanese nationality at the time of application are ineligible unless they plan to renounce Japanese nationality before arrival.
  • In principle, applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1992.
  • Applicants must have the necessary qualifications to be admitted to the Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo as a Master’s or a Doctoral Program student.
  • Applicants should apply for the field of study that they studied at their previous university or a related field.
  • Applicants must meet one of the language requirements in either English or in Japanese as described (e.g. CEFR B2 equivalent or JLPT N2).
  • Applicants must be physically and mentally healthy enough to pursue their studies in Japan.
  • Applicants must, in principle, be able to arrive in Japan within two weeks before or after the first day of the semester (October 1) in the year specified by the accepting university.

How to Apply for University of Tokyo MEXT

  • Submit required documents for MEXT Scholarship after completing the admission application for entering the Master’s/Doctoral Program following the Instructions for International Students applying to the Graduate School of Science (Special Selection for International Applicants).
  • Documents must be written in either Japanese or English, A4 format, printed double-sided; translations required for other languages.
  • Scan each application document listed and upload in the file format designated in the application form (such as PDF).
  • Upload all application documents and submit your electronic application through the Online Form for MEXT Electronic Application before the application deadline.

How are candidates nominated and selected?

Each Graduate School conducts preliminary selection and nominates candidates to the University of Tokyo. The University then nominates candidates to MEXT. Final grantees are decided upon screening at MEXT following the University’s nomination process.

When will applicants be notified of the results?

Nominees selected by the Graduate School of Science will be notified by e-mail in mid-February 2027. University-level nominees will be notified in April 2027. Official notification of grantees by MEXT is expected in June 2027 (tentative).

Are there any restrictions or cases of ineligibility?

Yes. Ineligible categories include active military members, applicants unable to travel within designated periods, previous MEXT scholarship recipients under certain conditions, applicants residing in Japan at the time of application, those planning to receive other specified government-funded scholarships, and others listed under Non-eligibility in the guidelines.

What happens if a recipient cannot arrive in Japan by the specified date?

If applicants cannot arrive in Japan by the date specified by the accepting university (within two weeks before or after October 1), they must withdraw their application unless deemed unavoidable by MEXT. Travel costs will not be paid for personal deviations from the specified arrival period.

Can the scholarship period be extended from Master’s to Doctoral?

An extension may be granted if a Master’s recipient desires to proceed to a Doctoral Program and meets rigorous examination criteria by MEXT, including outstanding academic performance and acceptance into the Doctoral Program. Extensions are not automatic and have additional conditions.
