University of Porto Criminology Scholarship 2026-2028 in Portugal | Fully Funded

This is a Research Scholarship for Master’s students in Criminology at the Faculty of Law, University of Porto. It supports work on a project titled “Predatory publishing practices: Paper tigers or actual threats from evaluation systems?” at the CIJ – Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Justice, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology and be enrolled in a Master’s program in Criminology, with proof required at contracting. If the degree was obtained abroad, Portuguese recognition of the academic degree is required. Preferred requirements include scientific research experience, qualitative data analysis skills, advanced English proficiency, and teamwork experience.

Selection is based on curricular assessment worth 75% and an optional interview worth 25%. The curricular assessment considers academic record, degree classification, and research experience. The optional interview, if needed, is conducted in English to assess qualitative research skills, English proficiency, motivation, and availability. Candidates scoring below the required profile may not be awarded.

The scholarship provides a monthly stipend of €1,090.98 paid by bank transfer. It also includes personal accident insurance and the option to join voluntary social insurance for contracts of 6 months or more. Recipients gain research experience in criminology and publishing practices.

The scholarship lasts for 12 months with exclusive dedication. It is renewable up to a maximum of 2 years depending on project duration and available funding.

Required documents include a Curriculum Vitae in English, academic qualification certificates, proof of enrollment in a Master’s program before contracting, an eligibility statement, and other relevant documents. Up to three recommendation letters are accepted, with at least one being mandatory.

The scholarship will be taken at the CIJ – Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Justice, Faculty of Law, University of Porto (FDUP), Portugal.

Portugal is the host country, but international applicants may apply if their degree is recognized in Portugal. If the degree was obtained abroad, applicants must provide Portuguese recognition of the academic degree.
