What is the University of Amsterdam Merit Scholarship 2026?

The University of Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) is a merit-based award for outstanding non-EU/EEA students applying for master’s programmes. It aims to support talent and attract high achievers to UvA’s international classroom.

Who is eligible to apply for the AMS 2026?

You must hold a non-EU/EEA passport and not qualify for Dutch student grants or low EU tuition. You must be applying for a UvA master’s for the first time, and enroll full-time in one of the eligible law, communication, or relevant faculty programs.

In which programs at UvA is the AMS available?

The scholarship is offered for select master’s tracks such as International and European Law, European Private Law, Law & Finance, International Criminal Law, Communication Science, and other eligible programs in relevant faculties.

What is the application deadline for AMS 2026?

The deadline for the AMS application is 15 January at 23:59 CET, and your master’s application at UvA must also be complete by this time. Only full submissions by that date are considered.

How is the AMS selection made?

Award decisions are based on academic merit: transcript grades, class rank, quality of motivation letter, CV, and promise in your chosen field. Competition is high, and exceptional academic achievement is essential.

Does AMS cover tuition fees or living costs?

In most cases, the AMS award equals the tuition fee. It is not a waiver: you must first pay the tuition yourself and then get reimbursed in installments. It usually does not fully cover living costs.

Can I receive AMS for multiple years?

Yes, AMS can continue into subsequent years if you maintain satisfactory study progress, as defined by your department. In general you need to gain about 80 % of your credits each year to keep eligibility.

What are the language requirements?

You must satisfy UvA’s English language requirements for entry into your master’s program. For programs like Psychology, you may need IELTS ≥ 7.0 or TOEFL ≥ 100 with component minima.

Can former UvA master’s students apply again?

No. AMS is reserved for first-time UvA master’s applicants. If you already hold a UvA master’s degree, you are not eligible for the AMS scholarship.
