UNESCO World Heritage Centre

Scholarships in Sweden

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre serves as the permanent secretariat for the World Heritage Convention, coordinating international efforts to protect cultural and natural heritage sites of outstanding universal value. Established in 1992, the Centre administers the World Heritage List, which currently includes over 1,100 properties across 167 countries, ranging from ancient archaeological sites and historic cities to unique natural landscapes and biodiversity hotspots. The Centre provides technical assistance to States Parties, monitors the state of conservation of listed properties, and manages the World Heritage Fund, which supports preservation projects in developing regions. Through its global network of experts and partnerships with governments, NGOs, and local communities, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre plays a crucial role in safeguarding humanity’s shared heritage for future generations. The Centre also organizes capacity-building workshops, develops educational materials, and promotes sustainable tourism practices that balance conservation with community development. By recognizing sites that demonstrate exceptional cultural or natural significance, UNESCO encourages international cooperation in heritage protection and raises awareness about the importance of preserving these irreplaceable treasures.
