OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship
The OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Programme is a comprehensive human rights training initiative established by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. This specialized fellowship aims to empower indigenous representatives by providing them with in-depth knowledge of international human rights mechanisms, instruments, and standards. The program typically lasts several weeks and includes intensive training sessions at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland. Participants gain practical skills in advocacy, documentation of human rights violations, and engagement with UN human rights bodies. The fellowship covers all related expenses including travel, accommodation, and daily subsistence allowances. Eligibility criteria generally require applicants to be indigenous persons with relevant community experience, basic knowledge of human rights, and proficiency in one of the UN working languages. The program has trained hundreds of indigenous human rights defenders since its inception, creating a global network of advocates who can effectively promote and protect indigenous rights within their communities and at international forums. Applications are typically accepted annually through a competitive selection process coordinated by OHCHR in partnership with indigenous organizations and academic institutions worldwide.
