Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are the most frequently asked questions about the Seeding Neuroscience Grants. These answers cover who can apply, eligible costs, deadlines, and how to submit an application through the IBRO Grants Portal.

What is the purpose of the Seeding Neuroscience Grants?

The IBRO Seeding Neuroscience Grants aim to provide financial support for inaugural activities such as governance planning or strategic workshops to build formal national or regional neuroscience societies or thematic networks, with the goal of developing sustainable and interactive neuroscience communities in targeted regions.

Who can apply for these grants?

Applications are welcomed from emerging neuroscience societies or groups of scientists working towards forming a formal society or thematic network, especially those based in regions with little or no formal neuroscience exchange. Groups or organizations representing the neuroscience community in the region may apply.

Are standalone conferences eligible for funding?

No. The program does not support standalone conferences or scientific meetings if the sole purpose is event organization without a clear, actionable plan to formally establish a society or sub-society. Proposed activities must focus on planning and governance necessary to launch a new entity.

What costs are eligible for funding?

Eligible costs include venue rental; participant travel and accommodation; event materials; audio-visual and technology costs for hybrid components; and administrative costs such as promotion and outreach efforts (administrative expenses may not exceed 10% of the total requested budget).

What costs are explicitly ineligible?

Ineligible costs include salaries or stipends for activity organizers or core team members, honoraria for speakers, equipment purchases (e.g. laptops, projectors), costs not directly tied to the activity or its objectives, and unspecified costs.

How much funding can applicants request?

Maximum grant amounts vary by region: Asia-Pacific up to 2,000 USD; Africa up to 5,000 USD; and Latin America up to 4,000 USD. Applicants should check IBRO’s country classification if unsure which region applies to their event.

When are applications open for 2026?

The application period shown on the program page is from 1 Sep 2026 to 30 Sep 2026. Applicants must submit their applications through the IBRO Grants Portal during this timeframe to be considered.

What supporting documents are required?

A strong application should include an applicant organization or group overview, detailed activity description and provisional program, budget breakdown, long-term sustainability plan, at least one letter of support from recognized neuroscience stakeholders, diversity and inclusion efforts, and plans for IBRO visibility.

How is the grant paid and what reporting is required?

The grant is awarded in an 80:20 format: 80% is provided two months prior to the activity start date, and the remaining 20% upon completion and submission of the grant report. The funding report must be uploaded in the IBRO Grants Portal no later than three months after the funded activity concludes.

How do I submit my application and who can I contact for questions?

Submit applications via the IBRO Grants Portal; new users must create an account on the portal. For technical issues use the portal’s customer support request form. For further program queries, contact the IBRO programs team via the contact link on the program page.
