The grant is designed for African nationals to undertake Ph.D. research programme. The research program is focused on the area of state capacities, governance, and bureaucracy for development.

Benefits

Successful applicants will receive fees for three years and an annual bursary of £16.000 per year. The scholarship also covers visa costs, HIS and TB (if undertaken), provided receipts are submitted to the Centre of African Studies office.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: Applicants from Africa (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia and Zimbabwe) can apply for this Mo Ibrahim foundation grant. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: award is awarded in the field of Governance for Development in Africa.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be domiciled (or permanent residents) in an African country. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa. Eligible Programmes: PhD Programme (full-time) research undertaken by scholarship applicants must directly address or be applicable to the issue of Governance in Africa.

Others

Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2016. If their offer is conditional on English, they have to arrange their English test and ensure they meet the English requirements as soon as possible.
