Robert S McNamara Fellowships Program 2025 | Fully Funded

The RSMFP is a program by the World Bank that connects aspiring development economics researchers from developing countries with World Bank research economists. Fellows participate in rigorous, policy-relevant research within the World Bank’s Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC).

Eligible candidates are nationals of World Bank member countries, preferably from developing nations. Applicants should have a master’s degree or be working on a PhD in Economics or related fields. They must be fluent in English and no older than 35 years by June 30th of the fellowship year.

The fellowship spans 8 months, typically from September to May each year. Fellows are hosted at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C., working under the supervision of DEC researchers.

Fellows gain work experience by helping with World Bank projects. They receive training on new research methods and work with World Bank operations. They may co-author publications, join field missions, and participate in seminars by top economists.

For the 2023-24 group, the fellowship provides a competitive pay of $46,500 after taxes. This amount is for 8 months and is paid monthly. The World Bank assists with G4 visa applications for the fellows. Note: The fellowship does not cover travel expenses.

A Selection Committee made up of World Bank DEC directors looks at applications. They use selection criteria and the fellowship’s goals for development. Consideration is given to gender diversity and geographical representation.

After the fellowship, fellows should go back to their home countries or universities. They will continue their studies or use their new skills. This will help with economic development issues. The program aims to enhance their ability to identify, study, and address important development policy questions.

No, the fellowship does not cover expenses for family members. The compensation is intended to support the fellow’s living expenses during the program duration.

Yes, fellows are invited to write a blog based on their fellowship research within DEC. This provides an opportunity to showcase their research and contribute to development policy discussions. Each year, the top four blogs are published on DEC’s “Let’s Talk Development” blog.
