Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are the most frequently asked questions about the MIBTP PhD Studentship. These answers cover eligibility, benefits, deadlines, interviews and how to apply based on the official MIBTP application guidance.

What is the application deadline for MIBTP PhD studentships?

Applications for the MIBTP PhD Studentship programme to start in October 2027 must be submitted before Monday 23rd November (the page indicates this deadline for the 2027 entry round). Applicants should ensure they follow all guidance on the application page and allow time for referees to submit references.

Who can apply as a home or UK student?

To be classed as a home student you must be a UK National meeting residency requirements, or have settled status, pre-settled status (meeting residency requirements), or indefinite leave to remain or enter. The page links to full eligibility criteria for further information.

Are international students eligible for funding?

International applicants are eligible; awards cover UK tuition fees and provide a stipend at the standard UKRI rate. UKRI funding will not cover the difference between UK and international tuition fees, but some partner institutions may offer funding to cover that difference.

What academic qualifications are required to apply?

Those with a 1st or a high 2.1 undergraduate degree in a relevant field are eligible. Applicants with a low 2.1 plus an additional Masters degree or at least three years postgraduate experience may be eligible; those with a 2.2 or below are only likely to be considered if their additional experience is exceptional.

How long is the studentship duration?

The University of Leicester section states that all MIBTP students will be provided with a 4 years studentship. This reflects that MIBTP studentships are intended to fund the PhD for four years at applicable partner institutions.

How do I express interest in MIBTP PhD Studentship?

You must complete the ED&I form as an expression of interest in MIBTP. The form helps monitor ED&I commitments; academic directors and the shortlisting panel do not have access to ED&I responses.

Where should I apply for a specific project?

Applications must be made to the university where the PhD project is listed (Aston, Birmingham, Coventry, Harper Adams, Leicester or Warwick) following the institution-specific instructions on the MIBTP application page.

What happens after I submit my application?

Once you submit your application an email will be sent to your referees asking them to fill in the reference. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interviews assessing academic aptitude, motivation for research and suitability for quantitative, interdisciplinary bioscience.

When are interviews scheduled for 2027 entry?

Interviews for 2027 entry are scheduled to take place in late January/early February 2027. Dates will be confirmed on the MIBTP page when finalised.

Who should I contact with application questions?

The MIBTP page advises consulting the FAQs first. If your question isn’t answered there, email MIBTP@warwick.ac.uk or contact the admissions/PGR team at the specific partner university listed in the application instructions.
