MEST AI Startup Program Eligibility Criteria

What does the seven-month AI Startup Program entail?

This 7-month, activity-based intensive training is designed for Africans with software development experience and entrepreneurial interest to explore and refine AI business ideas in teams. Participants test their ideas and build their startups in real-time while learning from world-class experts. The curriculum blends hands-on AI development, startup fundamentals, leadership training, and customer engagement.

What does the four-month incubation program entail?

This four-month incubation program is for a select number of high-potential AI ventures from the training program. The focus is on turning MVPs into market-ready AI products, securing customers, and scaling operations. By the end, each startup will have a fully functional AI product deployed to the market, validated business model, and users/customers ready for investment.

What determines if a startup and team is selected to move to incubation?

Startups and teams are evaluated on several criteria through a transparent scorecard system. Key areas include product and market validation (problem clarity, market size, early traction), product and business model feasibility (development readiness, monetization potential, scalability), and team strength, coachability, and strategic alignment with the incubator.

What are the qualifications to get into the program?

Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree, diploma, or equivalent experience; age 21-35; demonstrated software development experience; basic understanding of AI; strong interest in entrepreneurship; West or East African citizenship; and full commitment for up to 12 months. Preferred skills include cross-cultural teamwork, AI innovation experience, and previous entrepreneurial experience.

What is the recruitment process?

The recruitment process consists of five stages: Program Eligibility Screening, General Application and Video Submission, Assessment, In-person Group Challenge, and Individual In-person Interviews. Each stage helps identify the most motivated and capable candidates for the intensive program.

What countries do you recruit from?

For the 2027 intake, the focus is West and East Africa. In-person interviews will be held in Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Kenya. Nationals outside these core countries must be able to travel at their own cost to one of these countries for in-person interviews in October, if shortlisted.

What is the application timeline?

Applications open on 19th May 2026 and close on 20th July 2026. In-person Group Challenge and Individual Interviews take place in early October 2026. Contracts are issued in mid-October 2026.

What is the timeline for the next cohort?

Contracts are issued in October 2026. Pre-learning runs from November to December 2026. The program starts in January 2027, with graduation in August 2027. Incubation runs from September to December 2027, and portfolio onboarding begins in January 2028.

How much does this program cost?

The MEST AI Startup Program is fully-sponsored and requires no financial payments to MEST. It is a full-time residential program that requires commitment to full participation for a minimum of 7 months of training and, if selected, an additional 4 months of incubation.

Can I apply if I do not have a university degree or diploma?

Yes, you are welcome to apply if you do not have a university degree or diploma but have strong experience in software development. The program values equivalent experience alongside formal education.
