Eligibility Criteria

In order to be considered for the Iceland Writers Retreat Program 2026, students must:

• Applicants must be at least eighteen years old to be eligible.
• People with varying backgrounds and degrees of writing expertise are encouraged to apply.
• All citizens of all nations are eligible to enter the competition.
• English language proficiency is necessary, although IELTS is not.

• Check Your Eligibility
  Ensure you’re at least 18 years old by April 15, 2026. The retreat welcomes writers of all backgrounds and experience levels. However, family members of judges and previous attendees are not eligible.
• Prepare Your Application Materials
  Gather the following documents:
• A 1,000-word creative writing sample (fiction, non-fiction, or memoir)
• Two references from individuals familiar with your writing journey (excluding family members)
• A statement explaining why you wish to attend and how it will impact your writing
• An acknowledgment of your financial need
• Pay the Application Fee
  Submit a non-refundable application fee of 1,250 ISK. Your application will not be considered without this payment.
