Yes. Applicants must hold, or anticipate receiving before starting at EMBL (October of any given year), a university degree that would formally qualify them to enter a PhD or equivalent programme in the country where the degree was obtained. You may apply provided you will have the qualifying degree before starting the programme.

How many reference letters are required and when are they due?
Your application should be supported by a minimum of two academic reference letters. Referees must submit their online references by 14 October 2026, at 23:59 CET. You can submit your application irrespective of whether referees have completed the online form, but it is your responsibility to ensure references reach EMBL on time.

What is the selection process after I submit my application?
The selection process includes evaluation of written applications by EMBL faculty, possible informal pre-screening interviews, a Virtual Panel Assessment (VPA) which is a formal 30-minute panel interview, and then in-person 1-on-1 interviews for shortlisted candidates. Interview results are communicated shortly after the in-person interviews.
Will I need to give a presentation during the VPA?
No. The information for EMBL PhD Programme applicants states that during the Virtual Panel Assessment (VPA) candidates will not be asked to give a presentation. The VPA is a formal 30-minute panel interview assessing candidates on defined criteria.
Can applicants of any nationality apply?
Yes. The EMBL PhD Programme welcomes applications from all nationalities. The FAQ notes that non-member state applicants are welcome, although priority may be given to member state applicants if candidates are equally qualified.
Can I modify my application after submission?
Yes. After submission you will still be able to amend the information until the application deadline. You must save and resubmit after changing any fields. The online application allows edits up to the stated deadline.
What documents can I upload to the application?
The online application limits uploads to a maximum of five documents, each up to 2 MB in PDF format. Applicants are instructed not to upload CVs, recommendation letters, course certificates or language certificates as these will not be considered and will be removed from the application.
What happens if I am not selected for the programme?
Applicants who are not selected for the programme and opt in during the application process may be added to the Shared PhD Applicant Pool (ShAP). External researchers can access this pool to find qualified candidates. The pool is updated after each recruitment round and access is granted to external researchers under terms and conditions.
