What is the ENS International selection?

The International selection is a competitive examination at École normale supérieure – PSL aimed at admitting outstanding international students into the third year of a bachelor or the first year of a master. Selection is based on an application dossier and, for shortlisted candidates, remote written and oral tests.

Candidates must meet age and residency conditions and have sufficient foreign undergraduate studies. For Arts & Humanities applicants: be no older than 25 at application opening, not have resided in France over 10 months during the academic year or preceding year, provide proof of at least three years of study toward a foreign degree, and must not have applied previously.

For both Arts & Humanities and Sciences the application period opens 16 October 2026 (14:00 Paris time) and closes 15 December 2026 (14:00 Paris time). Shortlist results and test windows differ by section and are published on the ENS website according to the schedule.

How are applicants evaluated and selected?

Selection is two-step: initial dossier review to create a shortlist, followed by remote written and/or oral tests for shortlisted candidates. The jury evaluates academic excellence, motivation, project relevance and test performance; final admission is based on marks obtained at tests.

What financial support does the scholarship provide?

Admitted international students receive a grant of 1000 euros per month for three years and are provided a room on one of the ENS-PSL campuses. These benefits are stated on the ENS-PSL International selection page.

Are the tests conducted in French or English?

Competition tests in Arts & Humanities and Sciences are primarily conducted in French, although candidates may use English in some oral components. Details and regulations for distance tests are published on the ENS website.

Where and when are test results published?

Admissibility and admission results are published online and at ENS according to the published schedule. For example, Arts & Humanities shortlist results are published from 21 January 2027 and admission results from 9 March 2027; Sciences have their own schedule on the ENS page.

How do I apply for a visa and prepare for arrival if admitted?

Admitted candidates receive an invitation letter and an attestation for the visa in spring; they are given a list of documents required for administrative registration in September and information on French lessons, health insurance, opening a bank account and residency permit procedures.
