ESDC Internship provides students the opportunity to work at the European Security and Defence College, assisting with the organisation and running of ESDC activities and gaining understanding of the EU’s CSDP and CFSP.

The internship is offered by the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), operating under the responsibility of the High Representative and supported by the European External Action Service (EEAS). The ESDC is a network of civilian and military institutes, universities and other organisations.

ESDC Internship Benefits

  • Interns will be granted a monthly allowance of EUR 1500.
  • If they receive a grant (e.g. from the Erasmus+ programme), the ESDC will reimburse the difference up to the amount of EUR 1500.
  • Interns will be reimbursed for expenses in the event of occasional duty trips outside Brussels.

ESDC Internship Eligibility Criteria

  • Be nationals of a Member State of the European Union;
  • Be currently enrolled in an academic institution/university with a view to obtaining a bachelor’s/master’s degree or equivalent in a field relevant to the ESDC’s activities;
  • Be enrolled in an academic institution/university for the entire duration of the internship;
  • Have insurance that covers sickness and accidents for the entire duration of the internship;
  • Have a thorough knowledge of one EU working language (either English or French); a satisfactory knowledge of another language is an asset.

Who can apply for the ESDC Internship 2027?

What tasks will interns perform at the ESDC?

Interns assist in preparing, implementing and post-processing courses, seminars and conferences in CSDP/CFSP areas; prepare course materials, draft background briefs and reports; provide logistical and administrative support for meetings; support eLearning module revisions, maintain the training/course catalogue, draft the ESDC Annual report and assist knowledge management processes, including proofreading and drafting social media posts.

Is there any financial support for interns?

Yes. Interns will be granted a monthly allowance of EUR 1500. If an intern already receives a grant (for example from Erasmus+), the ESDC will reimburse the difference up to EUR 1500. Interns will also be reimbursed for expenses for occasional duty trips outside Brussels, subject to budget availability.

What are the rights and duties of interns?

Interns are placed under the responsibility of a mentor and must comply with instructions from their mentors and ESDC superiors, maintaining integrity, impartiality and courtesy. They must record activities and submit a report at the end of the internship. Interns may participate in ESDC duty trips subject to budget availability and are entitled to two working days of leave per month.

How are candidates selected for the internship?

Selection criteria include academic achievements, academic profile, international profile and work experience. Applications will be screened for compliance with requirements, and the most suitable applicants will be called for an interview by the ESDC as soon as possible. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

What language skills are required?

Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of one EU working language, either English or French. A satisfactory knowledge of another language is considered an asset. Language proficiency is part of the eligibility requirements and helps in performing tasks such as drafting briefs, attending meetings and preparing course materials.
