Wellcome Trust is pleased to announce International Training Fellowships In Public Health. This scheme offers nationals of low- and middle-income countries the opportunity to receive training at the postgraduate or postdoctoral level.  

The aim of this scheme is to provide support for you in the early years of your research career to consolidate your research skills and gain additional training to allow you to explore new research areas within the Science remit. This will enable you to mature as a researcher and develop your research vision.

An International Training Fellowship is for three years unless you want to hold it on a part-time basis. Salary, fees and research expenses covered

• If you want to do Master’s training or a diploma course relevant to the research proposal, the fellowship can last up to four years. You must be able to justify this training.
• The support includes:
  • a basic salary (determined by your host organization)
  • personal removal expenses
  • research management and support costs
  • research expenses, directly related to your proposal
  • course fees

• You can apply for an International Training Fellowship if:
  • you’re a national of a low- or middle-income country
  • your proposed research focuses on a health priority in a low- or middle-income country
  • you have sponsorship from an eligible host organization in a low- or middle-income country.
• You must: have a PhD and be an early-career researcher or have a degree in a relevant subject and some initial research experience or Be a clinically qualified doctor (and be qualified to enter higher specialist training), vet, dentist or clinical psychologist, and have some initial research experience.
• If you don’t have a Ph.D., we would expect you to register for one if you’re awarded this fellowship.
• You must want to undertake a guided period of research so that you can consolidate your existing experience and explore new areas of research.
• If you’ve been away from research (eg for a career break, maternity leave, or long-term sick leave), we’ll allow for this when we consider your application.

Description:  This scheme provides researchers from low- and middle-income countries – who are at an early stage in the establishment of their research careers – with opportunities for research experience and high-quality research training in public health and tropical medicine. Research should be aimed at understanding and improving public health and tropical medicine of local, national and global relevance. Public health and tropical medicine cover a wide range of health problems, including communicable and non-communicable diseases. This can include laboratory-based molecular analysis of field or clinical samples, but projects focused solely on studies in vitro or using animal models will not normally be considered under this scheme. This fellowship is part of a series of career awards aimed at building sustainable capacity in areas of research that have the potential for increasing health benefits for people and their livestock in low- and middle-income countries.
