Introduction

CEDIS – Centre for Research and Development on Law and Society – has 5 (five) PhD Research Scholarships financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. («FCT»), to assign to those who attend or will be admitted to attend one of the doctoral programmes of the NOVA School of Law.

Thus, under the terms of the Scientific Research Fellowship Holder Statute and the FCT Regulation of Studentships and Fellowships, CEDIS opens a call to award the 5 (five) referred individual doctoral scholarships (BD) starting from 1st September 2020, addressed to all students already admitted and enrolled in any of the PhD courses at the School of Law of NOVA University of Lisbon, as well as students who come to be admitted and enrolled to attend any of these doctoral courses in the academic year 2020/21.

CEDIS/NOVA PhD Research Scholarships in Portugal will be financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the Collaboration Protocol for Financing the Multiannual Plan for Research Scholarships for PhD Students, signed between FCT and CEDIS (UID 714). Applications must be submitted between 00h00 on 1st June 2020 and 24h00 on 26th June 2020 (Lisbon time).

Eligibility for the CEDIS/NOVA PhD Research Scholarships in Portugal: All students already admitted and enrolled in any of the PhD courses at the School of Law of NOVA University of Lisbon, as well as students who come to be admitted and enrolled to attend any of these doctoral courses in the academic year 2020/21.

APPLICATIONS

Applications must be written in English and submitted via e-mail to the following address: [email protected]. Documents supporting the application should be scanned and attached to the electronic application. Applications submitted by any other means will not be accepted. Applications must include the following documents demonstrating that the applicant satisfies the conditions required for the respective type of grant, according to art. 10 of the FCT Regulation of Studentships and Fellowships:

  • Research project that the candidate plans to develop (maximum of 25,000 characters);
  • Full curriculum vitae, including the final average of all academic degrees obtained and lists of publications with respective DOI (if any) and language skills (according to Common European Framework for languages);
  • Supervisor's brief curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and scientific production, as well as previous supervising experience, in the case that the supervisor is external to the School of Law of NOVA University of Lisbon;
  • Statement by the supervisor taking responsibility for the work program;
  • FCT form duly completed and signed5 ;
  • Candidate's association key6 ;
  • ORCID identifier number7 ;
  • Copy of an identification document and tax identification number;
  • Document proving the country of residence, residence permit or other legally equivalent document, when applicable;
  •  
  • Up-to-date documentation proving employment status during the time the applicant wishes to benefit from a grant, or, alternatively, a sworn statement that there will be no professional activity or service provision. Should the applicant wish to render teaching services whilst benefitting from a grant, he/she should indicate the nature of the employment contract, duties and average weekly teaching time. In the case of civil servants, applicants must submit a written statement committing to suspend their employment contract.8-9
  • Certificates of language skills (if any).
  • Certificates of all academic qualifications obtained on which the applicant intends to base their application, with a final average and, whenever possible, the respective percentile, as well as the diploma supplement relating to all academic qualifications already completed10, and grades of all subjects taken. With regard to academic degrees, we note the following:
    •  
    • the academic degree required for admission to this call must necessarily have been concluded by the date of submission of the application, being required as a document evidencing the award of the degree to be submitted with this application. The mere provision of other evidence that the applicant has concluded the study cycle is insufficient;
    • The presentation of the original documents proving the ownership of the academic degree (s) and diploma (s), or the respective recognition when they have been awarded by foreign higher education institutions, is exempted in the application phase, being replaced by a declaration of honour from the applicant according to his / her own draft, with the verification of this condition only during the contractualization phase of the scholarship;
    • if the academic degree (s) with which the candidate presents themselves to the competition is awarded by a foreign higher education institution, the registration of the recognition of the academic degree (process regulated by Decree -Law 341/2007, of 12th October) is no longer mandatory, nor the submittal of the process of equivalence/recognition regulated by Decree-Law 283/83 of 21st June nor, alternatively, the recognition of foreign degrees and diplomas (regulated by Decree-Law nº 66/2018, of 16th August). The registration of the degree must be concluded by the date when the contract with FCT is entered into. Also for applicants with diplomas issued by foreign institutions of higher education:
  • Candidates with diplomas issued by foreign higher education institutions can apply and will be evaluated using the same criteria as candidates with diplomas issued by Portuguese institutions, provided that they present, in their application, proof of recognition of academic degrees and the conversion of the final classification for the Portuguese classification scale under the terms of the applicable legislation.
  • Candidates with foreign degrees who do not show proof of conversion from the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale will be evaluated with the minimum classification (10 points) in criterion (a).
  • In any case, scholarship contracts with candidates with diplomas issued by foreign institutions will only be concluded upon presentation of proof of recognition of academic degrees and conversion of the final classification, as indicated above.

Important: the submittal of an application for an individual research grant does not exempt the applicant from the submission of an application to one of this School’s PhD programmes, in the case of applicants who are not already enrolled (and vice versa).
